Art, Football and the Culture Around the Game
Football has never existed solely within the boundaries of the pitch. It is the journey to the ground, the smells, the people, the music, the clothes and the memories attached to particular places and moments.
For British artist Jamie Liam Humphrey, those experiences have become inseparable from his work. The new Left Hand x Jamie Liam Humphrey collection brings those worlds together through two original artworks, reinterpreted across three T-shirts and two sweats.

Humphrey’s relationship with football began long before his relationship with art. He remembers attending his first game at five years old - and, decades later, it is the atmosphere surrounding the match that remains particularly vivid:
“You remember the smells of the burger vans and the singing, and the smell of cigarettes walking to the ground… the smell of the grass and the mist in the air. There’s something quite magical about it.”
Nostalgia has subsequently become an important part of his painting. Rather than illustrating football literally, Humphrey draws upon its emotion, movement and the wider culture that surrounds it.
Beyond the Pitch
Clothing is inevitably part of that story. Humphrey talks about the importance of what happens away from the pitch - the friendships, music, rituals and clothes that create a shared identity around football.
“The things on the pitch are just as important as the things off the pitch to me.”
He describes matchday clothing as being part of an “undercurrent” of culture, a sense of belonging and almost a uniform shared amongst those who understand it.
It is here that Humphrey’s world and Left Hand naturally intersect.
Process and Experimentation
Massimo Osti became an important reference for the works created for the collaboration, not simply because of the relationship between his clothing and football culture, but because of his experimental approach to design.
“He’s almost like an abstract artist with the work he does.”
Humphrey sees parallels between Osti’s exploration of materials and technology and his own intuitive approach to painting - working without necessarily knowing where the process will lead and responding to what happens along the way.
For the collaboration, two exclusive artworks have been fragmented, layered and reworked across five garments rather than simply reproduced as conventional graphics.
Three T-shirts are built on the Portofino Core Tee, using substantial 290GSM organic cotton jersey, while two sweats use the Portofino Core Sweat, made in Portugal from 420GSM organic cotton brushed-back fleece. Material, construction and print become part of the artwork itself.
Art, Football, Fashion
Earlier in his career, Humphrey felt that football and art existed as separate worlds. Today, those boundaries feel increasingly irrelevant.
“I feel as if art, football and fashion have all become entwined all of a sudden, a lot more.”
That intersection sits at the heart of the collection: football and the culture surrounding it, Humphrey’s instinctive approach to painting, and Left Hand’s ongoing exploration of material, process and construction.
